No Reason to Pray

Why is it that so many of us pray to God like we’re running for office?  In my opinion the biggest benefit to a relationship with God is that we are supposedly talking to someone who knows everything about us and loves us anyway.  If I have to fake around God like I can trick God into being my best friend if I sound cool enough, then I might as well have stayed in junior high.  My best friend has to be someone who I can be me with as I evolve as a being.  I can tell you from experience that it was one of the worst prayers in my life that actually brought me the closest to God.  I mentioned the experience in the video above, but go into detail in the following blogs:

The experience I had on that road trip was the point when I stopped simply believing in God and entered into full on relationship.  After that point, I knew that I did not need to hide anything from God.  It was a real born again moment.  Of course establishing a relationship is not the end.  It is the means.  Like any relationship there is continued learning and growth, which means a continual dying to the old self–what Paul called crucifying oneself daily. Also like every relationship, there is no set recipe or formula.  It just requires honesty and a willingness to be transformed.  Like Peter said, cast your cares, because God cares for us. I think that is the type of relationship David had with God.  That’s why he didn’t try to hide his feelings in his prayers.  He prayed an honest prayer at a moment when some of us would think we had no reason to pray.

Psalm 63

New King James Version (NKJV)

Joy in the Fellowship of God

A Psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah.

63 O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water.
So I have looked for You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and Your glory.

Because Your lovingkindness is better than life,
My lips shall praise You.
Thus I will bless You while I live;
I will lift up my hands in Your name.
My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness,
And my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips.

When I remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches.
Because You have been my help,
Therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.
My soul follows close behind You;
Your right hand upholds me.

But those who seek my life, to destroy it,
Shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
10 They shall fall by the sword;
They shall be a portion for jackals.

11 But the king shall rejoice in God;
Everyone who swears by Him shall glory;
But the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped.
