According to the World’s Rules

aaeaaqaaaaaaaamkaaaajdc0nmmyotu2lwexyjitngrhms05mmu1ltu3njfhytzlodq4zqI am beginning this post with the question in my mind, “What is the most liberating message that I could convey to readers at this moment?” I’m asking this, because I want to make a positive contribution to some of what I am witnessing with people right now. When I asked the question to myself, the first thing that came to my mind was the scripture from Romans 12:1-3 which says:

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters,by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.

I guess it popped in my head because I sometimes feel like making a similar appeal to people. I want to say “WAKE UP Y’ALL! STOP TRYING TO MAKE SENSE OUT OF NONSENSE! A LIE REPEATED INFINITELY WILL NEVER BECOME  THE TRUTH. BUT THE TRUTH ONCE UTTERED WILL DISSOLVE AN INFINITUDE OF LIES.

So I guess the response to that would probably be the same response Pilate had when Jesus said he came into the world to “testify to the truth”, which was the question, “What is Truth?” Personally, I believe everyone knows “the Truth”. When Jesus said, he came to testify to the Truth, I take it as him saying  he came to tell people how it is i.e. he came to tell the Truth about how the world works and the Laws according to which Creation is organized. So what are those laws?

Well, I think the laws are simply those forces out of which emerge the two great commandments from Jesus–Love God with all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength and love our neighbors as ourselves (including enemies). In doing these two things Jesus testified to the Truth and lived Truth and is Truth. Anything contrary to this life focus is living a lie. [I could unpack this more, but I’m just saying that Love is Truth and living a True Life is living a life centered in Love. Make of that what you will.]

So, going back to my assertion that everyone knows the Truth; I said this because everyone has a “Self” and every Self I’ve ever met wants to be loved. So, from my perspective, if you have a Self and living Truth is loving God and others as yourself, then to not love God and others is to either:

  1. Not love yourself
  2. Deny God who is Love (according to John)

Either way, to do one of these is to miss out on the fullness life has to offer.

To be conformed to this world is to be conformed to the idea of death–the idea out of which every falsehood comes. Everything of this world has an expiration date. To live from that space is to live from an emptiness that can never be filled. The fullness of life springs from the eternally new mind of God–or for those who have negative associations with the title God–Infinite Creative Intelligence. To be transformed through loving this mind is to experience yourself as who you are beyond form. Fellow Christians, if that sounds a little too woo woo for you, check out what Jeremiah was told by God according to the Bible:

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
I hear this as God saying, “I know the you that is beyond form–the you who is capable of accomplishing all that I imagine for you.” The catch to that is that we have to be willing to encounter the us that is beyond form AND recognize that others also have a them that is equally beyond form. That means that we can’t look at ourselves as being better than others. Because, when it comes down to it, whatever we see of anyone in this world of forms is the lesser part of who someone really is. That’s why I think Jesus was always hanging out with the unfavorables in his society. He wasn’t hanging out with what people saw when they looked at the outer person. He was communing with the inner unseen person and encouraging them to express more of their whole selves to the seen world of forms.
“Your faith has made you whole.” – Jesus
As long as we’re ruled by the world, we will never be whole. How can we expect to be? Nothing here lasts and who we are in the Mind of God was created for Eternity. Even people who believe they are “world rulers” will go “The Way of All Flesh“. If you have a challenge with grasping the temporariness of this world, read the Book of Ecclesiastes out of which comes the saying,
For the fate of humans and the fate of animals is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and humans have no advantage over the animals; for all is vanity.”
I know it’s a bummer. But only if you’re living con-formed.
Prayer
Eternal God,
Give us a vision of who we are beyond form, so that we might see your formless Kingdom among us. Help us to see that con-forming to the temporary is a one way ticket to no-where, but trans-forming is to enter Eternity which is Now Here.
Amen
