What Is God Doing?

My kid and I were in the car one day just chatting about one thing or the other when all of a sudden and totally out of context she asked, “What is God doing?”  My response was immediate and to the point.  It came from an unlearned knowing that was as natural to my mind as breathing is to my lungs.  I simply said, “God is doing everything.”  Then in that very instant that the words came out of my mouth, I literally felt myself “being done” along with my daughter and everything else within my perception.  I don’t know how else to explain it so I will leave to Ecclesiastes to put it in perspective.

Ecclesiastes 3:9-15

New International Version (NIV)

What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. God has made everything beautiful in its time and has also set eternity in the human heart; yetno one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.  I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink  and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.  I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will stand in awe. Whatever is has already been and what will be has been before and God will call the past to account.

I guess what I felt was the eternity in my heart and the realization that whatever is and will be has already been.  I wish that I could convey this more clearly, but I am coming up short.  All I know was that in that moment of rememberance, I knew that that moment in the car is eternal.  Nothing could be added or taken away from it because it was wholly within the realm of God.  There was no pillar of fire or talking donkeys, angels or cherubim.  It was just Calista and I forever united in the question, “What is God doing?” and living in the reality of  the answer that “God is doing Everything”.  In that moment I knew that my daughter and I are one in God’s love.  Not only that, I was aware that we all are One and that all the doings that we experience testify to this Love that is beyond human understanding.  We always are and always will be done by God.

So I guess the follow up question is “What are we doing?”  And I guess the appropriate answer would be “Nothing”.  Can you fathom this?  I truly wish I could put this into words.
